Known Issue: "Folder full Issue" in Outlook

 

     When you try to delete a folder or move a folder, you get;

“Cannot Move The Items. The Folder is Full”.

you get this even with folders that have nothing in them.

Permanently deleting (SHIFT+DELETE) doesn’t work either and results in the error;

“The message interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.”

How can you get Outlook back to work again?

This means your pst-file or ost-file either has reached its maximum size or holds a corruption.

An easy fix could be to empty your Deleted Items folder and try again. If that doesn’t work, the first thing you should do is verifying whether you are working with a pst-file or ost-file in ANSI format or UNICODE format.

Second, look up the size of the file as reported in Windows Explorer. You can find the location via;

File-> Data File Management

Maximum size

There are several limits that you could have reached;

    * If you are in ANSI format and the reported file size is around 1.8GB, you have reached the absolute maximum size of the pst-file. In that case, you’ll have to use the pst2gb tool to crop the oversized file to a smaller size so it can be accessed again and you can delete files, archive it or move it to a new pst-file in outlook.

    * If you are in UNICODE format and the reported size is around 4GB, you have reached the absolute maximum file size of your disk format (FAT32). Converting your disk format to NTFS is highly recommended.

    * If you are in UNICODE format and the reported size is around 20GB, you have reached the default maximum files size of the pst-/ost-file. You can (temporary) increase this default limit so you can move around or delete files. After this, it is recommended to remove the modifications again unless you have a specific need to really let this pst-file in outlook grow any larger (think about back-up and restore time as well)

Windows 7 Library issue when using Outlook 2003

       you are using Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 and when inserting a picture or file from or when saving a message to a Library, the Library shows up empty.

How do you fix this?

Office 2003 uses its own file browser dialogs which are not aware of the Library structure which was introduced in Windows 7. As a result, any Open/Save/Insert dialog box cannot show the contents of any Libraries. The same is true when selecting a computer from a Homegroup since this relies on the use of Libraries as well.

As far as I know, there is no fix planned for this. Instead of using the new Library  structure in Windows 7, you’ll have to browse to the folder where the pictures/files reside or where you want to save your message/attachments.

As a workaround, you could add some of your popular locations to the Places Bar.

How to disable grouping in Outlook 2010

         All messages are automatically grouped by Today, Yesterday, Monday, Tuesday, Last Week, 2 Weeks Ago, Last Month, etc…

     How can you set Outlook to show all my mail as a plain list without this grouping?

This view setting can be changed in the following way;

      * click on the "tab View" option, Then expand the Arrangement box via the Expand Ribbon Gallery button
      * Now you can disable: Show in Groups

Disable it via View Settings dialog

An alternative way to disable this option is via the View Settings dialog

     * Click on "Tab" View then select the button View Settings
     * Now select the option "Other Settings" and then disable the option: Show items in Groups

These steps can be followed on Outlook 2010 installed in Windows XP and Windows 7.

Tech Update: GeForce 500M series Notebook GPU's from Nvidia

         NVIDIA announced the GeForce 500M series of notebook graphics processing units (GPUs), designed to power laptops featuring next-generation Intel Core CPUs (SandyBridge).  

In Nvidia's own testing against Intel's Sandy Bridge integrated graphics, the GeForce GT 540M model trounced the former in Starcraft 2, pumping 69 fps versus Intel's 25.5, running at 1680x1050 at medium settings. Similarly the 540M beat Sandy Bridge integrated graphics in Black Ops, 56 fps to 27 under the same conditions. Now, yes, discrete versus integrated is hardly a fair fight, but the benches indicate a decent PC gaming experience for those inclined.

What is known are the specs of the GF114 core, which is expected to get 384 shader (visual effect) processors, 64 texture address units and 512 texture filtering units. It will also have 64 SFUs. This would make the new chipset about 20 percent faster than the current GeForce GTX 480M, a part normally targeted at desktop replacement notebooks.

Known Issue: Unable to hyperlinks in Outlook

           When trying to click on a hyperlink within an email you get the following error;

“This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.”

you are the administrator of this computer. How can use use these deactivated links again?

This usually happens when there is no default Internet browser (properly) registered in Windows.

To recover, it often is enough to reassign a default browser via;

    *  Windows 7

      Click on Start then select Default Programs

    * Windows XP

      Click on start and then select Control Pane, Now select Set Program Access and Defaults

When you have multiple browsers installed, it sometimes helps to set the other browser as the default, apply the changes and then set your preferred browser as the default again.

If you only have a single Internet browser installed in Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can also deselect all the defaults for the browser by pressing “Choose defaults for this program”, save the changes and then select them all again.

Reset the browser

Depending on your Internet browser, you might additionally need to reset the browser. For Internet Explorer this can be done in Control Panel-> Internet Options. When you use Internet Explorer 6 or lower, you’ll find this option on the Programs tab. For Internet Explorer 7 and 8, you can find this option on the Advanced tab.

For Firefox, open a Run command and type the following (note the spaces);
firefox -safe-mode firefox-safe-mode

In the dialog that pops-up select the option “Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults” and press “Make Changes and Restart”.

Turning off meeting and presentation alerts In outlook 2010

 
Outlook has various alerts such as the New Mail Desktop Alert and of course the notification sound. we also have some additional alerts set via rules.

When entering a meeting or giving a presentation, all these alerts are not so nice to have anymore.

Apart from closing Outlook, is there any way to turn these alerts off all at once?

If you are using Windows 7, you can put your laptop into Presentation Mode which suppresses all notifications.

Launching Presentation Mode

You can launch Presentation Mode via different methods;

    * By typing “presentationsettings” in the Start Menu Search field
    * Via Windows Mobility Center in Control Panel
    * By launching Windows Mobility Center via the keyboard shortcut; Windows Logo + X

You can also directly enable Presentation Mode via a Start Menu or Run command;
presentationsettings /start

To stop it again via a Start Menu or Run command use;
presentationsettings /stop

Go To Date function used to jump date quickly

    How can you quickly go to a date without scrolling through the calendar or Date Navigator?

The easiest way to do this would be to use the Go To Date function of the Calendar.

To use this function select the Calendar and press CTRL+G.
You can also find this function in the Go menu in Outlook 2007 and previous.
In Outlook 2010 you’ll have to press the expand icon Expand icon Ribbon of the Go To group.

There is more to this little dialog than it at first appears. You can actually use natural text and names of several holidays and events to quickly jump to their correspond date. For instance;

    * 3 weeks from now
    * Christmas
    * 2 days before Christmas
    * 2 months ago

These steps work in Windows XP and Windows 7.
