If you open an email in Outlook Express and it downloads the images referenced in the message automatically, not only do you get to see the nicely laid out email but the sender can see whether, when and possibly even where you opened the message.
If this is not suitable for you, you can change Outlook Express to refrain from downloading remote content automatically. This will not only protect your privacy but also prevents Outlook Express from trying to establish an internet connection whenever you open an email containing remote images while offline.
Steps to block remote images from loading automatically in Outlook Express:
- Select "Tools" | "Options"... from the menu.
- Go to the "Security" tab.
- Make sure "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" is checked.
- Click "OK".
These steps can be followed in Outlook Express installed in Windows XP,2000,98 etc
